About Us

Surjomukhi Handicrafts was established in 1994 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It is a Fair Trade Organization which is producing a variety of play products, toys and gift items in textile using its own designers and trained artisans.

From the outset, one of its main aims is to provide a stable and gainful source of employment for members of underprivileged rural tribes and lower class of the society. A large proportion of them are women with families. With Surjomukhi they can earn a regular monthly income and have the option of working from home, combining their work with raising their children. It is hoped that, once trained, they will be able to pass on their skills to others in the community.

The Product
Surjomukhi specializes in the production of hand-puppets, puppet theatres, children’s dressing-up, multi cultural costumes and dolls’ clothes. Gift items include cushion covers and a variety of bags.
Materials, including cotton fabric and accessories are locally sourced. Scrap materials are recycled by the artisans for their personal use.

Surjomukhi's designs have proved very popular with clients in the USA, Europe and Australia.

The company has a large collection of original designs which can be produced to order. However, we can also produce goods to the client’s specifications or from prototypes.

We keep up to date with trends in the market by attending trade fairs and we invite feedback from customers. We constantly track the performance of products to identify the most popular items.

For our artisans we have a social fund so we can cover their costs for:
- medical treatment
- courses and training
- education for their children
- social activity to strengthen their group identity
- etc.
