Surjomukhi (Handicrafts) was established in 1994 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It is a Fair Trade Organization which is producing a variety of Educational products, Play Costume, Toys, Prototype Costumes and Gift items in textile using its own designers and trained artisans.
From the outset, one of its main aims is to provide a stable and gainful source of employment for members of underprivileged rural tribes and lower class of the society. A large proportion of them are women with families. With Surjomukhi they can earn a regular monthly income and have the option of working from home, combining their work with raising their children. It is hoped that, once trained, they will be able to pass on their skills to others in the community.
Surjomukhi provides a safe, hygienic working environment and has a social fund to cover costs for their workers for:
- Medical Treatment
- Education for their children
- Social activity to strengthen their group identity
